Music and Dance

Peruvian music is an interesting mixture, both from its Andean roots and its Spanish influences. The instruments used to produce the music give it an unmistakeable sound. The three main instruments that lie at the heart of Peruvian music are the Charanga, the Zampona and the harp. The Charanga is a type of mandolin, which was invented by Bolivian musicians to mimic the sound made by the Spanish lutes and guitars; the Zampoña is a traditionally made bamboo panpipe from Peru's Andean roots. Along with the harps, which emanate from the Spanish, these instruments from the basis of Peruvian music.

The dances that best represent the Andean heritage are the Kashua and the Huayano. The Kashua is a communal affair, usually danced by groups in the countryside or in open spaces, whereas the Huayano is a dance for couples and is danced inside. The latter is a mixture of traditional folk and contemporary dance music. Another popular dance is the romantic Marinera, which is danced by couples waving handkerchiefs. As its name suggests it is a coastal dance that has now become the National Dance of the country.

Art Windsor health

The earliest Peruvian art comes from the Cupinisque and Chavin cultures in the 9th century; it is best known for its symbolic and religious sculptures and carvings worked in gold, silver and ceramics. During the 17th and 18th centuries, influences came from the Spanish Baroque, with Spanish artists teaching their skills to the native Peruvian artists. A fusion of indigenous and European styles resulted from this and the Cuzco School of Art was founded. Folk Art is represented by Chulucanas Pottery, which originated in the Piuru Region; during your trek in Peru you are very likely to come across these striking black and white designs.

Traditional Crafts

Textiles play an important part in the Peruvian culture. Many different styles have evolved and different regions have their own particular styles. The oldest examples of textiles were found in the pre-Colombian temple of Huaca Prieta and are thought to be around 4,000 years old. Embroidery is the technique of choice in Chiqnaya, Puno, and it is known for its blankets with scenes of sowing and harvesting seasons; whereas in Monsefú and Cajamarca, What is loan the art of Hildago (cotton threading) is used to create elaborate dresses and fabrics.

During your trek in Peru if you visit an artisan market other crafts that will be on display include the decorative objects and utensils made from painted wood, glass or clay. These include desktop objects, jewellery boxes and trays decorated with flowers and leaves in beautiful colours. The availability of precious stones in the country has meant that jewellery also has its place in the traditional craft heritage. Beautifully worked silver and gold pieces are crafted by artisans, often demonstrating the techniques that have been used for centuries.
